RIP Chuck Brown

DC lost one of it’s musical monuments yesterday with the passing of the godfather of go-go, Chuck Brown. I’ve always been a huge fan of go-go music that goes back as far as 1996. His music would always put a smile on peoples faces whether it was at the club or at a BBQ. For those outside of the DMV area who aren’t familiar with Chcuk Brown or go-go music, here is a pretty dope documentary I found floating around Facebook from 1989. I always love to see footage of old DC even if it’s just the people.

Mixtape Monday ft. “Plymouth Prowler Boys” by Uncle Jesse

plymouth prowler boys

[PREVIEW IT HERE]

Sup, assholes.  I got that good Plymouth Prowler Boys mixtape for today’s Mixtape Monday.  I know some of yall been seein’ the hints around The World Wide Intertron and have been anxiously awaiting , but if ya don’t know, Plymouth Prowler Boys is the latest movement from The Greatest City in America.  Also known as, Uncle Jesse to the Nth Degree, lettin’ yall know what the good word is.

If the exclusive white girl “Plymouth Prowler Boys” drops don’t hook you from the beginning, maybe it’ll be the smooth sounds of Drake, the falsetto of Usher, or the full-on ignorance of 2 Chainz.  I mean, if you were ridin’ around and gettin’ it chest naked in a Plymouth Prowler, this might could be something you’d be listening to.  Lucky for you, the “Plymouth Prowler Boys” mixtape also has like, a five mile radius of legit white girl magnetism.  Just give it a minute.  They’ll come.

Anyways, the “Plymouth Prowler Boys” is not just a mixtape.  It’s a lifestyle.  One that involves Rozay, awesome/awful throwback whips, and Phat Ass White Girls.  It’s not always for the faint of heart, but if you can hang, it’ll certainly increase your street cred a bit.  If not, you can always rock the mixtape – just don’t get caught fakin’ the funk.

PS - Allow this “Plymouth Prowler Boys” mixtape to serve as a precursor to Uncle Jesse’s forthcoming “adult” mixtape.  Sorry in advance.

Mixtape Monday ft. “Keep Watch Vol. XXIII” by Shiftee

KWXXIIICvr

What up yawl!  Stoop here.  Just FYI, if your white asses are still down for the count from “Cinco de Drinko” or whatever the fuck, you might could wanna tap out now because this mix is gonna knock you right back on ya ass.

If you’re still with me here, please press play and enjoy the sounds of NYC’s very own, Shiftee.  Dude is a motherfucking maniac behind the decks, as heard in Vol. XXIII of Mishka’s ongoing Keep Watch mixtape series.  Mishka recently did a countdown of their Top Five Most Memorable Keep Watch Mixes, and not surprisingly, Shiftee’s mix came out on top.  If you’re into the electronic music scene, you always hear this shit about DJs taking you on some kinda musical journey.  It sounds corny as hell but it’s way better than some dickface hodge podgin’ some random ass songs together and callin’ it a mix.  My point is, on Vol. XXIII, Shiftee totally takes you somewhere.  Like, I listened to this mix twice already tonight and I don’t even know where I am right now.  All I know is I’m neck-deep in unicorn pictures on The World Wide Intertron and I may or may not have pants on.

Vol. XXIII explores many different genres, from hip-hop to dubstep to indie rock and beyond.  Cohesion sounds nearly impossible but Shiftee utilizes his truly exceptional DJ skillz to make this tracklist unified like a delicious pb&j sandwich.  He makes it sound that easy.  Aggressive at times, Vol. XXIII is packing some serious heat and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart.  But Shiftee’s incredible scratching, mixing, and selection prowess is more than enough to make this mix a necessary addition to your weekly soundtrack, as well as a lesson in great DJing.

Impressed by his skillz?  Try this on for size.  He’s a two-time DMC champion, an adjunct professor at NYU, and director of curriculum at NYC’s Dubspot, all while toting a degree in math from Harvard.

Have a nice week, yawl.

Mixtape Monday ft. “Krush Groove Mixtape” by The Partysquad

partysquad

I guarantee that like, 80% of yawl are totally sleeping on The Partysquad.  I’m not mad, I’m just sayin’.  It’s about time you check them out.  Here’s a mix they put together earlier this month to promo a gig they played at Matrixx in the Netherlands with Diplo a few days ago.  The “Krush Groove Mixtape” serves as a hearty cross-section of today’s popular dance tunes and hip-hop tracks you’re most likely to hear in the club.  We’re talkin’ heavy hitters here like Flosstradamus, Diplo, Dillon Francis, Munchi, Major Lazer, and more.  But most importantly, the entire reason I posted this mix for today’s Mixtape Monday is so you check out those fucking Partysquad gems sprinkled within the mix, like “Badman” and “Lighterman”.  I’m obsessed and I regret nothing.  They’re totally owning that tropical bass sound that goes hand in hand with artists like Major Lazer and JWLS.  I want to hear this everywhere all the time.  But that’s me.  And maybe you, too.  Hopefully.

The Partysquad is a DJ and production duo consisting of DJ Jerry and MC Ruben.  They haven’t really marked their territory here in the US yet but they’re making huge tidal waves of bass in their Dutch-ass stompin’ grounds of Holland.  While they’ve opened for popular hip-hop artists like 50 Cent and Kanye West, they have a masterful handle on the coolest tunes in the electronic music scene as well as a perfect taste for that tropical flair.  You might know them for their exceptional work with Major Lazer on “Original Don” or maybe even their latest release, Badman Rave EP.  To top it all off, The Partysquad’s productions are mainstays in Diplo and Major Lazer’s sets, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t add their tunes to your own collection.

Tracklist:
1. The Partysquad – KrushGroove intro
2. Felix Cartal – Domo
3. Bingo Players – Rattle (Tony Romera Remix)

Mixtape Monday ft. “GTA Speak Up Tour 2012 Mix” by GTA

GTA

Now that the Speak Up tour with Laidback Luke and GTA is coming to an end today, I suggest you take an hour to (re)visit this super fun mix GTA curated to celebrate the launch of the tour back in March.  Laidback Luke and the boys of GTA toured the majority of the country in such little time and even paid a visit to Philly, Baltimore, and DC most recently.  This “Speak Up Tour Mix” gives everybody a little taste of what GTA’s all about – house, electro, and a little bit of moombahton.

This hour-long mix includes tracks on tracks on tracks of GTA remixes, edits, and mash-ups, as well as energetic dance gems from Laidback Luke, Nero, Steve Aoki, and more.  Nothing too aggressive and in your face – a slight blip here, a little wobble there, but mostly just some healthy, good vibes to soundtrack a good attitude.

GTA is paying their dues for sure.  They’re opening up for Laidback Luke now, but next year around this time, if not later this year, I predict that they’ll be headlining a tour of their very own.  GTA consists of two infamous Miami residents, Van Toth and moombahton superkid, JWLS.  Still enjoying their very early twenties, GTA has been welcomed with open arms into the EDM scene.  They very good, to say the least.  Working with highly-esteemed producers like Craze, Diplo, and LA Riots, it’s only a matter of time before they start running their own show.  The scene moves fast.  Make sure you check them out now before you get left behind!

Tracklist:
1. Laidback Luke, Arno Cost, Norman Doray – Trilogy (GTA Remix)
2. Blaze feat. Palmer Brown – My Beat (Marco V To My Beatleg)
3. Nero – Crush On You (GTA & LA Riots Remix)

Mixtape Monday ft. “Diplo and Friends” by Diplo

Another week, another mix to listen to while you watch Reed Rothchild destroy The Innernet, one douchebag jerkoff at a time.  This week I’ma put you on to Diplo’s new radio show on BBC Radio 1.  It’s called “Diplo and Friends” and it’s as simple as it sounds.  Diplo and his friends take over BBC Radio 1 and play two full hours of today’s sickest tunes every Saturday night.  I believe it airs around 8 or 9PM on the East Coast and you can stream it live via BBC Radio 1′s website.

The first week kicked off two Saturdays ago with Montreal’s Lunice and Mad Decent’s #1 dude, Paul Devro.  As it was totally fucking rad, I’m posting this past weekend’s show, which was two hours of Diplo rockin’ off.  No guests this week because Diplo’s birthday is coming up and he can do whatever he wants, apparently.

He’s all over the board with this one, droppin’ moombahton tracks from GTA and ETC!ETC!; hip-hop with 2Chainz and Kanye West; dubstep with Rusko; reggae with Jr Blender and Bunny Wailer; and even some indie tunes from Grimes and Santigold.  You don’t even need a preview of this jawn – one look at the tracklist and you’ll be all over dat download, son.  ENJOY!!

CLOCKWORK on Friday: Steve Starks edition

Brace for impact on Friday because Clockwork at Rock & Roll Hotel this Friday has the “sensation” guest DJing, none other then the pride of Columbia Maryland, Steve Starks Along with the resident Misfits Will 88, Philip Goyette and that awkward drunk Rothchild.  The good news is that I don’t have to say much because the homies music speaks for itself.  See you at Rock & Roll on Friday, bamas!

Mixtape Monday ft. “Entrapment” by Dirty South Joe

Entrapment

I hope y’all are still doped up on peeps and chocolate bunnies so you can really get busy to this fucking banger of a mixtape I’ve got for ya today.  Here on this very special Mixtape Monday, Cool Breezy (my main squeeze) and STRFRNT present to you:  ”Entrapment” by one of the trillest dudes on the East Coast, Philly’s Dirty South Joe.

“Entrapment” is THAT mix.  It’s the perfect mix to bump today just to let everyone know you ain’t fuckin’ around on this here Monday.  An hour’s worth of heavy bass, undulating wobbles, and trunk music from DJs and producers from here to there, “Entrapment” means business and will not take NO for an answer.  There’s no shortage of trill musical stylings here – from Rick Ross’ Maybach Music, 2Chainz’s lackadaisical flow, and future bass bumpin’ from David Heartbreak.

Just in case you’re uninformed, Dirty South Joe spearheaded the Luvstep movement straight outta Philly with his homie Flufftronix.  Luvstep breaks free of that “brostep” stigma and showcases dubstep tunes that are more melodic than most.  It’s something to be proud of, for sure, but that’s not all he’s about.  Joe is a true hip-hop head and as business-minded as ever.  As a DJ, producer, promoter, and talent manager affiliated with Mad Decent, Brick Bandits, and Cool Records, it’s an understatement to say he’s basically running Philly right now.

The Greatest Festival in the World, Raving in the Black Sea

My go to on the internet to get my mind BLOWN away is on the VICE. They have articles on there that can open your eyes on the world without leaving your couch. Shane Smith is one of my favorite reporters on there traveling around to the most fucked up, shit storm places in the world and reporting it while managing not to get killed. One of the videos I came across recently was so fucking dope, I had to post it up here. This is a rave on the Black Sea in an abandoned nuclear reactor called KAZAHTHN. after watching, I immediately checked my bank funds to see how the fuck I can get in the mix. Hope the rave heads of HOR enjoy this as much as I did.
