Mixtape Monday ft. Smutlee’s Mix for The Selector

smutlee

I know yall are still reeling from all that Ziplock drama over the weekend (me too) but nobody’s gonna be mad if you wanna dance your pain away.   Unless you’re really white.  In which case I might politely ask you to sit down or hit the kitchen to make me a snack.

ANYWAY!  I’ve got the perfect lil mix for today’s edition of Mixtape Monday, courtesy of my homie Smutlee from “across the pond” as we Americans say.  This thirty minute jam session was recorded live the other week at The Selector and while it contains one of my favorite moombahton tracks EVER (Mescal Kid – “Majic” (Smutlee Re-Edit)), this mix is mostly NOT moombahton.  It’s more along the lines of UK funky and garage until it fades out into moombahton towards the tail end of the mix.  In fact, the entire mix spotlights an exclusively UK cast.  You think we’re rockin’ over here?  They’re doin’ the damn thing over there!  With tracks from Bassjackers, Funkystepz, SBTRKT, and a few gems from Smutlee’s own vault, it’s bouncy, wobbly, and tropical all at the same time.  I feel like doing the running man for thirty minutes straight.

Tracklist:
X5 – Baby
DJ Salem – Bomberman (DJ Spookz Remix)
Zulu – Kwaito
SBTRKT – Living Like I Do (Lil Silva Remix)
Wiley – Skankin’ (The 2 Bears Instrumental Remix)
Gorgon City – The Crypt Feat. Navigator & Rubi Dan
Bless Beats – Wanna Be Ur Man
TS7 – Grade A
Funkystepz – Class A
Hardhouse Banton – Capoeira Mata Um (Zum Zum Zum)
Zed Bias – Dancing (Smutlee Re-Edit)
Bassjackers – Soja (Smutlee Re-Edit)
Mescal Kid – Majic (Smutlee Re-Edit)
Schlachthofbronx – Chambacu (Smutlee Remix)
Natalie Storm – Nuh Teki Back (Smutlee Dubplate)
Baobinga & Xxxy – Barbakan
Behling & Simpson – Last Chance
Youngstar & Smutlee – Pulse 110 Feat. Chan Dizzy

Mixtape Monday ft. “Sun In My Eyes” by DJ Impulse

I just spent the last five days in sunny Miami for the Winter Music Shitshow and all I need to battle these intense warm weather withdrawals is this dope summertime mix from DJ Impulse.  ”Sun In My Eyes” is some real, roll down the windows and let the warm breeze flow, kinda mix you’re gonna need to kick off the warm weather seasons.

I’m pretty sure Impulse had his summer toes out while he was makin’ this mix.  ”Sun In My Eyes” coasts through a summertime stroll through some of the coolest tracks, from De La Soul, Mayer Hawthorne, Treasure Fingers, Marvin Gaye, and Solidisco.  With genres ranging from electro, club, moombahton, hip hop, and disco, this one covers all the bases.  ”Sun In My Eyes” is all about good vibes so make sure you’re collectin’ ‘em here!

Mixtape Monday ft. “Carioca Bass Mixtape” by Zuzuka Poderosa

carioca bass

I’m off to Miami tomorrow for a long week of bass music, cuban sammiches, and binge drinking, so I’ma heat up Mixtape Monday today with a new mix from Brazilian vocalist, Zuzuka Poderosa.  She’s holdin’ it down in Brooklyn now but you bet she brought some of that tropical heat with her from Brazil.  Many close followers of moombahton, baile funk, and any other tropical musical stylings already know about Zuzuka, but if you’re not familiar yet, her “Carioca Bass Mixtape” is the most accurate depiction of what she’s all about.  It’s hot, heavy, and bursting at the seams with energy, much like her own personal characteristics.  She’s so funky, bright, and wild, I’m tempted to dub her as the M.I.A. of moombahton (sans all that heavy political shit).  Her sound is so fitting for the genere

The “Carioca Bass Mixtape” features tracks from Sany Pitbull, DJ Edgar, Slick Shoota, and tons of Zuzuka’s own productions.  Zuzuka mostly works with other producers in the same tropical spectrum to create these addictive bass tracks, over which she sings and raps in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.  Lots of these tracks sound like a hodge podge of many different tropical vibes but it all heavily relies on a Miami booty bass movement.  If it sounds out of control, that’s because it is.  “Carioca Bass Mixtape” and the entire Zuzuka Poderosa movement is enough to get yall hot and heavy no matter where you’re shakin it.

Tracklist:
1. Intro & Drops – Sany Pitbull & Zuzuka Poderosa
2. Zuzuka Poderosa & Kush Arora – Seda
3. Zuzuka Poderosa – Celular (Nego Mozambique & Rio Neurotic Bass)
4. Zuzuka Poderosa – Celular (DJ The CLAW & Rio Neurotic Bass)
5. Nego Mozambique – Surfista Do Pavao
6. DJ Edgar – Le Click Boladao
7. Kush Arora Ft. Mega Banton – Shake Sitten (Stereotyp Remix)
8. 5kin and Bone5 – Reset & Zuzuka Poderosa – Carmen Miranda Acapella
9. Dizzy Wright – Solo Dolo
10. French Fries – Champagne
11. Zuzuka Poderosa & Kush Arora – Boy Next Door
12. Spoek Mathambo & Gnucci Banana – Piggy Bank
13. Blatta And Inesha – Pet Massage (Kush Arora & Bakir Remix vs Zuzuka Poderosa Acapella)
14. Zuzuka Poderosa – Entre e Sai (Bassanovva Alien Disco Mix)
15. Ghislain Poirier – Marathon vs Fausto Faucet Katia Flavia (Zuzuka Poderosa Acapella)

Mixtape Monday ft. “Yard Laser” by Uncle Jesse

these assholes

yard laser

Sup party people!  Stoop here with your Mixtape Monday Mayhem.  Today I’m revisiting one of the very first Uncle Jesse mixes EVER, “Yard Laser”.  Yall know my homies in Uncle Jesse are some of my favorite DJs in Baltimore right now.  Their extensive knowledge of music allows them to get any crowd rockin’ – from hyper Baltimore club dancers to old house heads to young ravers – they’ve got it like that.  Not only do they possess the most supreme DJ skillz, but they are also considered to be amongst the top echelon of Baltimore’s most handsome scholars.

Now onto “Yard Laser”.  It’s probably one of the most cohesive mixes I’ve listened to in a while.  While it’s a lot of fun to genre-hop sometimes, “Yard Laser” features a bunch of tracks that remain within a similar vein of electro and club music, so it truly sounds like one solid journey from beginning to end.  You’ll have a chance to enjoy timeless classics like old school Nadastrom to one of the first tracks Uncle Jesse ever produced.  Even though “Yard Laser” was mixed years ago (probably before I was even old enough to get into the clubs – ha), it’s gonna keep you movin’ like it was hot off the press.  Grab this mix, rage like you’ve never raged before, and don’t be afraid to take it back for another go.

ProTip:  If you like what you hear, Uncle Jesse will be playing at my first party in Baltimore THIS Friday night at Golden West Cafe.  Come see if you can hang.

Tracklist:
1. John Dahlback – Everywhere (Rustler Remix)
2. Kid Dub – Congo
3. Bingo Players – Chop
4. Nadastrom -The Way You Movin’
5. Jack Beats vs Dynamite MC – What (Boy 8 Bit Remix)
6. Uncle Jesse – F-Type b/w DJ Technics – Throw Ya Hands (Acapella)
7. Wolfgang Gartner – Hook Shot
8. Chavy Boys – Makin’ A Livin
9. Brad Slims – Kill the System (Stupid Fresh Remix)
10. Count of Monte Cristal – Dub More Foward – Toolroom b/w Big Red & Kool Breeze -Yoo & Yu (Acapella)
11. Donkeybits – Push It
12. Idiotproof – Gorilla (Siriusmo’s Ass Of The Baboon Remix)

Mixtape Monday ft. “BBC Radio1 Essential Mix (11/26/2011)” by Eats Everything

EatsEverything

I found this BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix by Eats Everything by way of the homies in Nouveau Riche and thought it to be the perfect way to ease us all into the week.  Radio 1 has THE ABSOLUTE BEST mixes.  They’re all about allowing the most forward-thinking DJs at the time to really get in there and show what they’re made of.  Because of that, Radio 1 Mixes are all pretty lengthy in time, usually about two hours, so you can really settle in and collect the vibes.

This particular Essential Mix by Eats Everything is from November of 2011 but it still holds up with great ease months later.  Eats Everything is a house producer from Bristol and has over twenty years of DJing under his belt.  This mix alone is a tell-tale sign that he could get you up out of your seat and groovin’ for hours.  Even better, this mix is DJ’d live from a skate park in Bristol and Pete Tong, the host of BBC Essential Mix, even flew in to emcee the event.  In other words, the vibes are so reaaaaaal!  Just another example of how subtle drops and steady grooves work just as effectively (if not better) than your run-of-the-mill rager.

If any of yall DC cats are interested in hearing good music and dancing all night long, Eats Everything will be sliding through U Hall on 3/15!

Tracklist:
Eats Everything – Entrance Song (Remix)
Murk – Amame (Eats Everything QI Rebeef)

Mixtape Monday ft. “Hardcore” by Murder Mark

Hardcore

Tracks like these are exactly why people ask me if i “live in The Wire” when they find out I’m from Baltimore.  For his latest mixtape, “Hardcore”, Baltimore producer, Murder Mark, collected a thirty minute cross-section of some of Baltimore club’s hardest, most aggressive tracks.  Ranging from Rod Lee to KW Griff to Blaqstarr to Murder Mark’s own original productions, “Hardcore” is goin’ straight backbacon on yawl.  Don’t get me wrong – we’re havin’ a good time up here in Baltimore, but we ain’t fuckin’ around.  Aggressive synths, grimey bass, and sprinkles of gunshots, you know we mean business!!

You can’t really tell by how devoted he is to the genre now, but Murder Mark used to hate Baltimore club.  I have since forgiven him for this obvious misstep, but he’s made penance by creating some wildin’ ass club music and even by being named City Paper’s Best Club Music Producer for 2010.  Mark’s keepin’ it tight and stays in the lab workin’ on fre$h beats.  He’s makin’ a name for himself, Baltimore club, and our violently charming city of Baltimore.  Get you some.

Tracklist:
1. I Ain’t Budging – Murder Mark
2. My Niggaz – Dj Juwan featuring Mike-Mike and Murder Mark
3. Shake His Bush – Murder Mark and Mike-Mike
4. I’m Da Shit – Gucci Mane featuring Da Yo Boyz

Mixtape Monday ft. “Pre Party Jamz v. 129″ by Skinny Friedman

Time to combat that 2:30 Feeling with a mix from Philly’s Skinny Friedman.  “Pre Party Jamz” is the 129th Volume in the set at Nicky Digital, so if you like what you hear from Skinny, there’s much more where that came from.  Lucky for you, me, and every other hurting soul out there that’s felt the wrath of Monday, Skinny’s mix includes a quick selection of hip-hop, club, and dubstep that’ll get you movin’ and groovin’ again.

If you’re not too familiar with Skinny Friedman, allow this mix for Nicky Digital to be a stepping stone.  With DJ Apt One, he forms the DJ and production duo known as Philadelphyinz, who create everything from hip-hop, house, disco, and now moombahton.  Skinny also has a heavy presence in New York with Fools Gold’s Sammy Bananas by throwing a popular “off-night” party at Pianos.

Check out Skinny’s SoundCloud to get a better idea of what he can do, especially with heavy moombahton flavors.  But until then, rock this mix!!

Tracklist:
Silky Johnson – “Desert Rose”
Shady Blaze and Beautiful Lou – “Ima get em”
Cool Breeze – “Cre-A-Tine (Screwed Up)”
Sinjin Hawke – “Crystal Dust”
Skinny Friedman – “Hello???”
Julio Bashmore – “Batty Knee Dance”
Wheez-Ie – “Barefoot Billy” (DJ Assault Remix)
Krames and Dirtyfinger – “To the Club”
Jim-E Stack – “Come Between”
Rustie – “Ultra Thizz”

R4NS0M and DENMAN Attack Your Cerebrum This Friday at ZOo00OOM!

I have two dreams for this final apocalyptic year: The first is to drop beats at as many beer throwin, shit showin, STD knowin HOR parties as I can. My sets at those are pretty much, “You like Maybach music? Great I like Maybach music. Here’s a ton of that. Everyone wins (especially if they can’t remember.) The other dichotomous dream is to continue pushing the ever loving shit out of my career as a mind warping, bass crunching, wonk…e…ing (I don’t know), future bass DJ. Fortunately this Friday will be another chance for me to pump the zygote of that species.

This Friday, at Backbar in DC, (Conveniently located in the sex dungeon of the 9:30 Club), R4NS0M and DENMAN (oh, hey, that’s me refering to myself in the third person) will be dropping the finest in future bass, grime, footwork, UK/Deep dubstep, and drum n bass (go MetalHeadz or go home), so roll the most Louisville slugger of a blunt your foodstamps can acquire (filled with totally legal tobacco of course), and come freak the fuck out to some dirty bass in space. Turnout has been damn good so far, and we’d love to keep the momentum going. Why not be a winner, and peep the facebook event?

Still scratching your downy, water filled cranium? Ok, here’s a bit of what we’ll be dropping:
