I’d like to first start off by introducing myself and state how honored I am our glorious leader chose to have me be part of this special assignment for the glory of the HOR Republic. I am non by a slew of monikers including Kylo, Don Juan Frydanez, Dj Frydae, Rowdy Rowdy Pointer and a few more the dabs just aren’t allowing me to remember right now, but for the purposes of this column you can just call me Senor Frydanez. I make my living by running a local smoke shop in Manch-Vegas NH as well as djing and producing electronic music… Oh and I’ve been known to smoke a bit of the wacky tabby as well.
Because of my access to the industry, my focus here will most likely lean towards whats new in the cannabis culture. This will most likely include up to date information, gossip and even some opinion on the newest in Vaporizer technology, Grow Tech, Hand Blown Glass and what has become a bit of an obsession as of late, methods of cannabis EXTRACTION!!!
I definitely want to encourage people to write in or comment as much as possible as although my shop keeps me up to date pretty well, I KNOW that new things are happening literally daily and I definitely want to hear about the stuff I may have not seen or tried yet.
“Only in America could we make weed into crack” Everyday I’m asked what these funny looking new pipes and vapes are for so I guess this is as good of place to start as any. In this article I will be delving into the buzzword of 2012….DABS!
1st off if you’re living in a medical cannabis state then close your macbook and go fire up the torch as you are WELL aware of what we’ll be discussing here. If not you may or may not be versed in the art of stickiest of icky and you should get your pen out and take some notes. This by NO MEANS is meant to be the end all be all of concentrate information, merely a starting point for the less informed. Please don’t blow me up saying I left stuff out…
The term Dabs is an all encompassing word for seemingly everything concentrated cannabis. Also known around as Oil, Honey Oil, ERRL or a grip of other code names, the term is used for the concentrated cannabis itself as well as the act of smoking them. We’re not talking your Dad’s old hand hash here. Dabs are a super concentrated version of hash that come in a seemingly endless array of consistencies and colors and are being made from almost every high grade strain available today. The best definition for dabs or full melt concentrates I could find online comes from Buds of Steele “A cannabis concentrate is any product of a chemical extraction being performed on cannabis. Isopropyl and Butane are the most common solvents used for this process but there are many that will work. The solvent dissolves the THC, Cannabanoids, Terpenes and Waxes from the plant and it leaves behind the plant matter. Oils made today have tested at potency rates of over 60% THC, meaning 1 gram of 60% oil would contain .6 grams of THC and .4 grams of other stuff (waxes, terpenes etc.) whereas a gram of the highest potency weed (30%) would be .3 grams of THC and .7grams of plant matter, waxes, terpenes etc.”
To Dab or Not to Dab that is the question…
Before you go and blow up your Mom’s house like some sort of Walter White of weed lets look into the issue of safety. BHO extraction can certainly be unsafe. First off you’re holding a glass tube filled with a flammable liquid ie a pipe bomb. Second there is some concerns to the health risks involved in using extracts extracted from solvents as well. The latter of the two is still up for debate as addressed pretty thoroughly here by a panel for Norml. I definitely encourage you to watch this and any other information you can obtain before making the jump to extracts.
Making your own BHO…
As mentioned above if you live in a Medical or the two completely legal states obtaining BHO should be as easy as strolling down the block and picking one made from your favorite strain out at your local dispensary. If not then get over to youtube and search BHO extraction. There are countless methods of extraction including using Butane, ISO, Ethanol or even Co2. There is also many methods of purging or removing unwanted remnants of the solvents as well including Do some research and see what works for your situation. As it is youtube you will definitely find some WRONG information but there is also TONS of good info to go off. In simplest terms you will need at least 5x purified butane, a pyrex plate, heat source and a tube to contain the flower (pot) and of course Flower itself. Most folks today are using trim (the remnants of a grow) but ground up buds will work too. Below is a few videos of the process. I want to stress that HOR takes NO responsibility for you attempting this process. Be smart and always blast outdoors!!
BHO Extraction 101
Cornucopia of Concentrates
Concentrates come in all forms these days from super gooey Earwax to the almost shard like Shatter. These concentrates are named solely based on their looks as far as I can tell and are achieved through different methods of extraction and purging. When all is said and done its really a matter of personal preference and willingness to experiment that is creating so many different kinds of concentrates, so lets take a look at some of the different varieties of stuff you might be seeing on the streets and dispensaries.
BUDDA/BUDDER: This comes in all kinds of color and consistency depending on strain and process but is traditionally made via Butane and a whipping process.
SHATTER: Shatter starts off the same as Budder but is processed differently (fully) in the purge phase. Shatter is my personal favorite kind of extract as it is super easy to handle and is perfect for dunking.
HONEYCOMB: Honeycomb has become a favorite amongst Hash artists of late. Honeycomb is great for Dunks as you can usually handle it pretty long without it sticking to your hands.
Dabs as a verb
Dabbing or Dunking (depending on the consistency) is the act of smoking/vaporizing the concentrate. The pipes or rigs as they have become known as Oil Rigs (Get it?) are traditionally smaller with less percolation then a normal (flower) tube. Much like the “knife hits” of old you heat up a “nail” or “skillet” made of titanium, quartz or glass with a torch and touch the dab to it causing it to essentially vaporize the extract. The science of rigs and concentrate vaporizers is changing every day so lets take a look at some of the newest and coolest ways of ingesting these concentrates.
Skillets or swings as some people in my shop call them are usually but not limited to attachments to your regular tube. I may be wrong on this but I believe skillets were the first concentrate specific tools. I base this off having them in my shop before the others listed below. Skillets swing to and from the piece for ease of heating and usually have a bell like piece to trap the smoke in much like the dome. I personally am not a huge fan of them but they tend to work great with the dryer of the concentrates. Again I would suggest only running a titanium for heating and reliability reasons but have seen them made of glass as well.
Here is a little how to using the now traditional nail and dome setup.
In contrast to what they say in this video I personally suggest getting a titanium nail or at least a quartz. The glass nails tend to lose heat super quick and there is a slight chance of them cracking with constant heat leaving your rig at risk.
A dome/nail combo can be retrofitted to your current glass on glass tube but I suggest having the right tool for the job and getting a dedicated rig. Most rigs are much smaller then a traditional tube, but as the dab phenomenon has taken the country by storm you’re starting to see some really intricate stuff including pipes with a torch built in like these two.
Concentrate vaporizers or pen vaporizers are the newest and most portable ways to enjoy concentrates. They are much like an electronic cigarette and come in so many different configurations I plan to do full review article comparing as many as I can get my hands on in the future (Vape makers get at me). Until then lets take a look a few.
So anyone still with me or have we all ran out to the local headship for butane and extractor tubes??? Again this was meant to be a beginners guide to the world of BHO and extract culture in total. I am hoping you found the information above…well informative and I cant wait to speak to some of you out there about this and my future articles.
For the Glory of the HOR Republic…Senor Frydanez.
