What up, my little Christmas cuties!  I’m sure most of yall are totally lampin’ hard today but as this is the very last Mixtape Monday of 2011, I wanted to go hard in the egg nog and present you with a monster of a mixtape.  So here we have Designer Drugs‘ Datamix 16, complete with two hours of eyeball-rattling dubstep and tunes that make girls dance.

Designer Drugs is the DJ and production duo made up of Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson from New York City.  Earlier this year, they released their debut album, Hardcore/Softcore, which serves as a musical demonstration of their range of styles – from edgy punk to big room club anthems and funky electro.  They thrive off of people’s apocalyptic ways of not giving a single fuck, which happens to be pretty fitting for HOR, amirite?!

Designer Drugs has been compiling these Datamixes for the past four months but they’ve grown massively along the way.  The Datamix 01 was only thirty minutes long but fast forward to Datamix 16 and it’s a fucking trip, touting over seventy tracks and two hours in length.

Mixtape Monday ft. “They Playin My Shit” by Pickster

We haven’t seen any moombahton mixes for a while here on Mixtape Monday, and this one’s hot off the presses, so you might wanna let it cool off a bit.  What we have here is “They Playin My Shit”, almost an hour of “hip hop-infused moombahton” curated by one of Arizona’s original gunslingaz, Pickster One.

“They Playin My Shit” includes remixes and edits from a lot of moombahtonistas you probably already know, like Diplo, Sazon Booya, and Skinny Friedman of the Philadelpyinz.  Before moombahton, Pickster already had an extensive hip-hop DJ career under his belt.  But Dave Nada had to change the game up and now it’s becoming mandatory for DJs to slow their set down to 108 bpm at some time during the night.  With “They Playin My Shit”, Pickster is acknowledging the overlap of hip-hop with EDM’s newest genre, moombahton, as well as anticipating the fusion’s success on the Top 40 charts of the music industry.  Once considered a gimmicky trend, moombahton is proving to be anything but.  Dedicated moombahtonistas are putting in work to secure the genre’s spot as mainstay in EDM culture.

“They Playin My Shit” is one of those releases that serves as a perfect entry point for new fans of moombahton.  It combines old school and new school hip-hop tracks, which everybody should know, with the many flavors of moombahton.  There’s innovative takes on new school tracks, like the Long Jawns and Bobby la Beat remix of Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” and the Market Price remix of Kanye West and Jay Z’s “Otis”.  Sprinkled within new school hits, you’ll hear revived versions of some songs you haven’t heard in a while, like A-Mac’s “Lemme See Ya Pop” and JWLS’ “DTF” remix of The Ying Yang Twins’ “Wait (The Whisper Song)”.  While it deviates a bit from moombahton’s original format, “They Playin My Shit” is a fun mix that determines the staying power of moombahton as a mainstream entity.
